Solvent Massing
A quantitative analysis measures the difference in yarn weight before and after chemical cleansing to determine the amount of removed substances. Conducting mass balance extraction provides an accurate record of how much spin finish or wax has been dissolved. It is a critical check for ensuring that synthetic yarns are clean.
Contaminant Removal
The process relies on a Soxhlet extractor to wash the yarn with a volatile solvent. The solvent dissolves the surface oils and carries them into the flask. The weight of the dry yarn specimen before extraction is compared to its weight after the process is complete.
Evaporative Verification
Calculating the difference yields the percentage of extractable matter that was present on the yarn. This mass balance extraction method is highly reliable because it accounts for all of the mass in the closed system. It is used as a reference test for calibrating continuous scouring machines.
Process Efficiency
Finishing plants use this information to adjust the detergent feed rates on their lines. Incomplete oil removal can interfere with subsequent dye uptake and cause uneven coloring. By maintaining a clean fiber surface, the mill ensures that dyeing and printing steps proceed without defects, which minimizes the need for reprocessing and dye-house corrections, thus saving time and reducing chemical waste.
