Reference Material
Certified buffer solutions with traceabilities to the National Institute of Standards and Technology provide the absolute calibration points for laboratory pH meters. These references, known as NIST pH standards, are used to calibrate meters in textile testing labs to ensure international consistency of test results. They are used for verifying the pH of aqueous extracts from finished garments.
Testing Protocol
Calibration procedures require the use of at least two separate buffer solutions that bracket the expected pH of the dyebath. In textile laboratories, the common values used are four, seven, and ten, each prepared to high precision. Using NIST pH standards guarantees that a pH of six point eight measured in one lab matches the same value measured at a supplier facility.
Quality Control
Brand specifications and retail standards often mandate the use of these certified reference materials during final fabric inspections. When testing clothing for skin safety, the pH of the water extract must lie within a strict range, typically between four point zero and seven point five. Using certified buffers prevents disputes between the mill and the retail auditor.
Storage Boundary
Exposure to air allows carbon dioxide absorption, which alters the pH of the alkaline buffers over time.
