Mass Analysis
Thermal moisture extraction measures the absolute mass of a textile material by heating it to evaporate all volatile moisture. Laboratory technicians use oven dry mass testing to determine the commercial weight of fiber and yarn shipments. This process requires heating the sample at a constant temperature of one hundred and five degrees Celsius until it stops losing weight.
This moisture-free weight is the baseline for all fiber blending and yield calculations.
Chemical Extraction
Non-fibrous substances like spinning oils and finishes must be accounted for before calculating the final dry weight. During oven dry mass testing, samples are often pre-washed to remove these coatings so that only the pure textile mass remains. This step ensures that the test results accurately reflect the fiber content of the shipment.
Moisture Regain
Fibers naturally absorb moisture from the air, which increases their weight and alters commercial transactions. After completing oven dry mass testing, the standard moisture regain percentage is mathematically added back to the dry weight to calculate the commercial mass. This standardized calculation ensures a fair transaction between the fiber mill and the garment factory.
Standard Equipment
Accurate measurements depend on using specialized ventilated ovens with integrated balances that allow weighing without opening the chamber. This setup for oven dry mass testing prevents the hot, dry sample from rapidly absorbing moisture from the surrounding room.
