Volumetric Measure
Operational parameter measuring the frequency at which the finish solution in a padding machine is replaced during a continuous run prevents chemical tailing. The pad trough turnover volume is calculated by dividing the total volume of the pad trough by the rate of liquor consumption. Maintaining a high turnover rate ensures that the concentration of dye or finish remains constant throughout the run.
This prevents differences in shade or finish performance between the start and end of the batch. In continuous ranges, keeping this value within the specified range is the primary method for avoiding long-term color drift across thousands of meters of fabric.
Chemical Stability
Continuous consumption of the liquor requires constant replenishment to keep the padder running at the correct level. If the pad trough turnover volume is low, the chemical solution remains in the trough too long, which can lead to temperature changes and chemical depletion. In reactive dyeing, a low turnover rate can cause hydrolyzed dye to accumulate, resulting in lower dye fixation.
Maintaining a rapid turnover ensures that fresh chemical is constantly introduced, which stabilizes the bath composition.
Bath Equilibrium
Dye concentration must remain in a state of balance between the feed tank and the fabric to avoid listing or tailing. Pad trough turnover volume should be designed such that the entire volume is replaced within a few minutes of operation. To achieve this, the trough volume is kept as small as possible, often using displacement rollers to reduce the capacity of the trough.
This design minimizes the amount of wasted liquor at the end of the production run.
Operational Safeguard
Operators monitor the feed rate and the bath level continuously to ensure that the turnover is maintained. An inadequate turnover rate leads to chemical separation in the trough, which can cause streaks on the fabric. By tracking the consumption of the chemical recipe against the yardage processed, the factory can verify that the finishing parameters are correct.
