Fiber Blend
Blended textiles combine the strength of synthetic fibers with the comfort of natural fibers to create durable fabrics. Analyzing a polyester cotton mixture is standard practice to verify the percentage of each fiber type present in the yarn. This verification ensures compliance with global textile labeling regulations.
Chemical Separation
Quantitative analysis utilizes selective dissolution to separate the two fiber types for individual weighing. In a polyester cotton mixture, the cotton component is dissolved using seventy percent sulfuric acid, leaving the polyester fibers intact. The remaining polyester is then washed, dried, and weighed to calculate the original ratio of the blend.
Moisture Management
Drying temperatures and moisture regain values must be factored into the final calculation because cotton naturally absorbs more water than polyester. The dry weight of the residue is adjusted using standard moisture allowance percentages to find the commercial weight of each fiber. This adjustment prevents errors in the declared blend ratio due to environmental humidity during testing.
Quality Inspection
Inaccurate fiber ratios can affect the dyeing process because polyester requires disperse dyes at high temperatures, while cotton uses reactive dyes. If the polyester cotton mixture deviates from the target specifications, the final color of the fabric may be uneven or off-shade. This discrepancy can lead to the rejection of entire production lots at the garment factory, costing the manufacturer time and resources.
