Mass Quantitation
Analytical measurements of remaining solid mass after solvent evaporation determine the total non-volatile matter present on fibre or fabric surfaces. Extracted using organic solvents inside Soxhlet apparatus or automated extractors, gravimetric residue quantifies spin finishes, knitting oils, sizing agents and residual waxes on textile substrates. This laboratory metric verifies chemical application levels and scoured yarn purity prior to dyeing, but excludes volatile compounds that evaporate below standard drying oven temperatures.
Extraction Method
Solvent washing removes surface lubricants and processing auxiliaries from a pre-weighed textile sample into a clean receiving vessel. Distillation boils off the volatile solvent, leaving behind non-volatile oils and waxes which are then dried in an oven and weighed on an analytical balance. Calculating the mass difference relative to initial dry fabric mass establishes the percentage of extractable chemical matter present on the material.
Quality Significance
Excessive residual oil levels cause unlevel dyeing, smoke generation during heat setting and poor coating adhesion. Scoured fabrics must demonstrate low residue values to prevent streakiness in light shade dyeings.
Commercial Tolerance
Purchasing agreements set strict maximum limits for extractable content in raw yarns and grey goods. Mill inspection reports certify residue levels against buyer tolerance limits.
