Color Shielding
Non-uniform dye distribution can occur when parts of a fabric rope or yarn package are physically shielded from the dyestuff by adjacent folds or yarns during the wet processing cycle. The shadow effect results in lighter patches or lines on the fabric surface, where the compressed structure of the rope prevented the dye molecules from diffusing evenly. This shielding creates a visible shade variation that can make the fabric unusable for high-quality garments.
Cause Analysis
Structural compression within the dyeing machine is the primary cause of this coloring defect. When the fabric rope does not shift or unfold during its circulation, the areas inside the tight folds do not receive the same exposure to the dye stream as the outer surfaces, which creates the shadow effect in those spots. This risk is highest in dense, heavy fabrics where the high weight of the wet material increases the compression forces within the storage chamber.
Levelness Control
Machine adjustments and chemical additions must be optimized to ensure that the dye bath is distributed evenly throughout the entire fabric volume. To prevent the shadow effect, operators can increase the speed of the fabric rope or adjust the plaiting mechanism to ensure that the fabric folds are constantly shifting. The use of leveling agents in the dye bath also helps by slowing down the rate of dye fixation, which allows the color to distribute evenly before it becomes permanently fixed, thereby ensuring that the yarn surfaces receive equal exposure to the active dye molecules during the entire process cycle.
Quality Check
Visual inspection of the dyed fabric under standardized lighting conditions is used to detect this coloring defect before the roll is approved for garment production. If the shadow effect is present, it appears as long, soft-edged bands of lighter shade along the length of the fabric roll. This inspection allows the quality team to reject or re-work the batch before it is sent to the cutting floor, which prevents the production of defective garments.
