Application Rate
Starch application density on warp yarn during slashing determines downstream weaving efficiency. Sizing box pick up describes the dry weight percentage of film forming solids retained by the yarn after squeezing between the immersion nip rollers. Textile engineers measure this metric on continuous sizing ranges before the dried warp reaches the weaver beam.
A target window between ten and fifteen percent balances warp hairiness reduction against excessive stiffness on heavy cotton styles.
Fluid Dynamics
Squeeze roll pressure dictates the primary mechanical extraction of surplus liquor from the submerged sheet. Hydraulic loading across the nip directly controls the final solid retention value by forcing excess paste back into the trough. Viscosity fluctuations alter the hydraulic wedge inside the nip zone and shift the extraction equilibrium without operator intervention.
Higher bath temperatures reduce the internal friction of the applied starch slurry and promote deeper penetration into the multifilament bundle.
Drying Limits
Evaporative capacity on cylinder dryers imposes an operational ceiling on wet pick up percentages. Excessive moisture retention requires reduced machine speeds to prevent adhesive transfer between adjacent warp ends during cylinder contact. Cylinder surface temperatures must remain regulated to prevent skin drying phenomena that trap internal moisture inside the starch film.
Underdried warp sheets stick together during splitting at the leasing rods and cause warp breakage on the loom.
Quality Verification
Laboratory extraction of dried warp samples confirms the exact solid deposition rate through ether extraction or enzymatic desizing weight loss analysis. Bulk production lots fail technical specifications when actual solid retention deviates outside the contracted tolerance band. High pick up values restrict yarn elongation and cause filament rupture during cyclic shedding motions.
Low values leave protruding fibres unbonded and invite abrasion damage as heddles and reeds cycle against the warp face.
