Dyestuff Category
Water-soluble sodium salts of acid leuco sulfuric esters of vat dyes offer a simplified application method for high-fastness coloration on cellulose. Unlike traditional vat dyes, solubilized vat pigments do not require a reduction step with sodium hydrosulfite before application. This characteristic allows them to be applied directly from an aqueous solution to cotton or viscose.
The fabric is then treated with an oxidizing agent in an acid bath to regenerate the insoluble parent vat pigment.
Application Cycle
Continuous dyeing ranges utilize these colorants to achieve highly level shades on lightweight cotton fabrics. The application of solubilized vat pigments begins with padding the fabric through a solution containing the dissolved dye and a mild oxidizing agent like sodium nitrite. Next, the fabric is passed through a dilute sulfuric acid bath at elevated temperatures to hydrolyze the ester groups.
This step converts the soluble dye into the insoluble vat pigment within the fiber structure, securing it against washing. This method avoids the use of strong reducing agents, protecting the environment. The result is a highly uniform color that penetrates the fiber assembly without causing the blotchiness sometimes seen with traditional pigment padding.
Chemical Conversion
Chemical oxidation must be carefully controlled to ensure complete conversion of the dye. If the acid bath is too weak or the contact time too short, the solubilized vat pigments will not convert fully, resulting in poor color yield and rubbing fastness. After oxidation, the fabric is washed and soaped at the boil to remove any surface dye and to allow the pigment to crystallize.
This crystallization process improves the lightfastness and wetfastness of the dyed textile.
Technical Advantage
Dyers prefer these colorants for pastel shades on high-quality shirtings and bedding due to their excellent levelness and penetration. While they are more expensive than standard vat dyes, the ease of application and the absence of harsh reduction chemicals make them a valuable choice for specialty dye houses. They provide outstanding resistance to light and multiple washings.
