Indirect Measure
Indirect numbering systems based on length per unit mass identify the linear density of fine plied cotton yarns. In commercial trade, yarn count Ne 100/2 designates a folded yarn produced by twisting together two single strands that each possess an English cotton count of one hundred hanks per pound. The resulting plied structure yields an effective linear density equivalent to Ne 50 single yarn, corresponding to approximately eleven point eight tex in the direct metric system.
This designation defines fine staple yarn spun from extra-long staple raw cotton, terminating its applicability where open-end or coarse rotor spinning methods replace fine combing routines.
Spinning Formation
Production of the component singles requires premium cotton fibres exhibiting upper half mean lengths exceeding thirty-five millimeters, such as Giza or Pima varieties. Producing singles fine enough for yarn count Ne 100/2 demands extensive preparation through high-efficiency blowrooms, precision carding machines, draw frames, and combing preparation lines to achieve low nep counts. Combing machines extract short fibres to ensure that the combed sliver achieves a combing noil level between fifteen and twenty percent.
Ring spinning frames draft the combed roving using high spindle speeds, inserting precise twist factors to balance output strength against yarn hairiness. Because single Ne 100 yarns possess very low mass per unit length, individual single strands lack sufficient durability to withstand warp tension without folding. Spinning mills inspect single-end regularity on capacitive testers to ensure that mass coefficient of variation values remain below ten percent before sending bobbins to the two-for-one twisters.
Plying Structure
Twisting two singles together in the reverse direction neutralizes internal snarling torque. In yarn count Ne 100/2, an S-twist folding operation balances the original Z-twist singles, yielding a smooth, cylindrical assembly with superior tensile tenacity and minimal surface fuzz. The folding process doubles the breaking load while halving the linear variation inherent to single yarns.
Commercial Application
Luxury apparel markets specify this fine plied yarn for premium shirting and high-density poplin fabrics. Fabric interlaced from yarn count Ne 100/2 delivers a crisp hand and exceptional surface luster that persists through repeated industrial washing. Sourcing contracts require delivery inspections to verify that actual count falls within plus or minus two percent of nominal Ne 50 plied equivalent under standard moisture regain conditions.
Mill certificates confirm twist per meter and single-strand elongation at break before lots are accepted for warp preparation.
