Imaging Technique
Analytical imaging techniques allow for the non destructive chemical characterization of polymers and additives at a microscopic scale. Use of confocal raman microscopy provides high spatial resolution by filtering out of focus light through a pinhole. It identifies synthetic fibres, finish distributions, pigment locations and polymer additives within a cross section of a garment.
Surface Interaction
Data captured from spectroscopic analysis identifies molecular vibrations. Captured confocal raman microscopy data shows the crystallinity of a polyester yarn or the depth of a water repellent coating.
Mapping Capability
Mapping capabilities allow a technician to create a three dimensional visual representation of chemical components within a single filament. By scanning the laser across a sample, confocal raman microscopy distinguishes between the core and sheath of a bicomponent fibre. Technical analysis identifies if a specific functional finish has penetrated the substrate or remains on the exterior face.
The technique also detects contaminants that cause localized dyeing defects or physical weakening of the fabric structure.
Practical Application
Practical applications in a mill environment involve verifying the uniformity of high performance coatings or the authenticity of recycled content. Specialized labs use confocal raman microscopy to prove that a textile contains the specific polymer claimed in its technical data sheet.
