Packaging Protection
Raw cotton bales must be protected from moisture and physical contamination during long-distance maritime transport and storage. Cotton gins apply a high density polyethylene wrap to seal the compressed cotton block against dirt, grease, and rain. This durable plastic sheeting prevents external pollutants from entering the fiber mass.
Contamination Prevention
Tears in the protective sheeting can allow dirt to penetrate the bale during forklift handling. Using a high density polyethylene wrap ensures that the outer cotton layers remain clean and dry during rough shipping conditions. However, workers must remove the wrap carefully to avoid leaving plastic scraps in the fiber.
Material Properties
The synthetic film exhibits high tear resistance and low moisture permeability, which are essential for outdoor storage. This film remains stable under varying temperatures and does not degrade when exposed to sunlight during transport. These characteristics make it a reliable packaging choice for international trade.
Processing Risks
If pieces of this packaging material accidentally enter the processing line, they can cause extensive fiber contamination. Workers at the opening line inspect every bale to ensure that no high density polyethylene wrap is drawn into the automatic bale pluckers. Thorough inspection at this initial stage prevents serious downstream defects in the spun yarn.
This is because any plastic particles that bypass the initial opening line are shredded into millions of microscopic fibers by the carding wires. These tiny synthetic filaments then blend with the cotton fibers and lead to massive dyeing failures in the finished fabric.
