Yarn Preparation
Textile sizing processes apply a protective adhesive coating to warp yarns to withstand the abrasive forces of high-speed weaving looms. Blended yarns require specific chemical formulations, where polyester cotton slashing combines starch and synthetic binders to coat both the natural and synthetic fibres evenly. This protective film prevents warp breaks.
Adhesive Application
Acrylic copolymers are added to the starch mix to ensure adequate adhesion to the smooth polyester surfaces. While starch adheres well to cotton, synthetic fibres require specialized binders for effective sizing. This mixture reduces yarn hairiness.
Weavability Improvement
Reduction in yarn-to-yarn friction on the loom depends on the uniform application of the size mixture. Warp yarns treated during polyester cotton slashing show greater resistance to the constant abrasion of the reed and heald wires. Higher weaving efficiency reduces production costs.
Temperature Monitoring
Controlling the drying temperature on the cylinder drying range is essential to prevent the synthetic fibers from melting or the starch from baking. Dry cylinders must be kept at graduated temperatures to drive off moisture without causing the sizing film to become brittle. Over-drying creates stiff yarn that breaks easily during weaving, whereas under-drying leaves the warp wet and prone to mildew.
