Antioxidant Additive
Chemical compounds derived from gallic acid act as stabilizers to prevent the oxidation of oils and polymers. In the textile industry, propyl gallate is added to spin finishes and lubricating oils to protect them from rancidity and thickening. This white crystalline powder works by scavenging free radicals before they can attack the molecular structure of the lubricant.
Its presence ensures that the processing oils do not degrade into sticky resins when stored on the fibre surface.
Finish Protection
Oils applied to fibres during carding and spinning are prone to drying and becoming gummy when exposed to air. Including propyl gallate in the formulation ensures that the finish remains liquid and effective throughout the long periods between spinning and scouring. This prevents the formation of insoluble residues that would interfere with subsequent dyeing steps.
Synergistic Effect
Manufacturers often combine this stabilizer with other antioxidants to broaden the range of protection. When used alongside citric acid, propyl gallate provides a more effective barrier against auto-oxidation at various temperatures.
Regulatory Compliance
Safety standards govern the use of such additives in materials that come into contact with skin. Since propyl gallate is also used as a food grade preservative, it is generally considered safe for use in apparel and domestic textiles. Verifying the concentration of the stabilizer ensures that the finish meets both performance and safety requirements.
