Chemical Structure
Chemical formulation of flexible polymer finishes relies on heavy organic esters to prevent rapid degradation under environmental exposure. Respected for its low volatility, totm trimellitate is a high-molecular-weight ester used as a plasticizer in high-temperature polyvinyl chloride coatings. It replaces lighter phthalate compounds in fabrics that must withstand extreme heat.
Thermal Stability
Coated fabrics used in automotive interiors or industrial equipment face continuous exposure to heat. Because totm trimellitate has a large molecular structure, it remains stable in the polymer matrix under these conditions. The compound does not evaporate or degrade when the fabric is heated.
This thermal stability prevents the polymer from becoming brittle or cracking over time. It ensures that the fabric maintains its strength and flexibility during its service life.
Migration Profile
Exposure to oils and soapy water can wash away standard plasticizers from a polymer. Thanks to its low solubility, totm trimellitate resists extraction, making it highly durable in harsh cleaning conditions.
Application Limit
High cost and processing requirements can limit the use of this compound in some manufacturing setups. Its high viscosity makes blending totm trimellitate with PVC resins more difficult, requiring higher temperatures and longer mixing times. Consequently, this plasticizer is reserved for premium products where durability justifies the extra production costs.
It is not used for standard, low-cost apparel.
