Biochemical Preparation
Enzymatic hydrolysis removes starch sizing agents from textile warps to prepare fabric for subsequent wet processing stages. Amylase desizing utilizes specific protein catalysts to break down complex carbohydrate chains into water-soluble sugars. The procedure requires precise control of temperature and pH levels to ensure optimal activity of the selected enzyme during the immersion phase.
Failure to achieve complete removal leaves residual starch that interferes with uniform dyeing and printing results later in the supply chain.
Hydrolysis Mechanism
Enzymes catalyze the degradation of long-chain amylose and amylopectin molecules by cleaving alpha-1,4-glucosidic linkages. This breakdown reduces the high molecular weight of the size, converting insoluble solids into smaller, soluble fragments that disperse in water. Manufacturers apply the chemical bath through pad-roll or continuous washing equipment to ensure thorough saturation of the grey fabric.
After the reaction time concludes, a hot wash removes the suspended degradation products.
Process Variable
Maintaining thermal stability within the equipment prevents protein denaturation, which stops the reaction entirely. Variations in water hardness or the presence of metallic impurities in the supply stream potentially inhibit enzyme performance. Mills verify the efficacy of the treatment by testing fabric absorbency through drop tests or capillary flow measurements.
Consistent performance relies upon the concentration of the product relative to the total starch content present in the warp yarn.
Operational Boundary
Effectiveness terminates when the concentration of water-soluble byproducts reaches a point where osmotic pressure slows the reaction rate. Treatment conditions strictly govern the duration of exposure because excessive timing causes degradation of the underlying cellulose fibres. Proper rinsing protocols determine the final cleanliness of the substrate before entry into the bleaching or dyeing vessel.
Correct application of these catalysts dictates the quality of all following textile finishing operations.
