Standard Mass
Transactional transactions for raw fiber and yarn rely on a calculated mass value that accounts for standardized moisture regain percentages instead of the physical mass recorded at the shipping dock. The billable commercial weight is determined by heating a representative sample until it reaches oven-dry conditions and then mathematically adding the official regain factor. This adjustment removes the impact of varying atmospheric humidity from the financial calculation during international trade.
Dry Weight
Laboratory technicians determine the absolute anhydrous mass of the textile shipment by weighing extracted samples after exposure to forced-draft hot air. This procedure removes all unbound water and finishes from the fiber until successive measurements show no further mass loss. The resulting clean dry mass is the baseline for all subsequent commercial calculations.
Without this baseline, weight fluctuations due to maritime transit humidity would distort the final invoice value. The sample is kept in a sealed weighing bottle to prevent reabsorption of water before the dry weight is recorded on calibrated analytical scales. This step isolates the raw fiber content from environmental interference.
Moisture Allowance
Different fibers require distinct standard moisture additions that are added back to the bone-dry weight according to international commercial conventions. Polyester yarn receives a modest regain addition of less than one percent, while wool fiber takes a generous fifteen percent increase to establish the billable commercial weight. This systematic calculation ensures that buyers only pay for the moisture the fiber naturally retains under standard laboratory conditions rather than water absorbed during open-air storage.
Disputed Variance
Shipment disputes between mills and garment manufacturers often arise when the bulk weight at destination diverges from the values reported on the packing list. If the received mass differs significantly, the parties re-evaluate the shipment by calculating the billable commercial weight of the lot through an independent testing agency. This determination overrides the physical weights recorded at either factory, providing a legally binding weight for the final invoice.
