Application Ratio
Amount of liquid chemical solution retained by a textile substrate after padding and before drying determines the final functional properties of the material. Technicians measure fabric finishing pick up to control the concentration of softeners, flame retardants, or water repellents added to the cloth. This metric is expressed as a percentage of the fabric’s dry weight before treatment.
It provides the essential benchmark for maintaining consistency across different production batches.
Moisture Control
Controlling the squeeze roller pressure of the padder is the primary method for adjusting the amount of chemical solution left in the fabric. A high fabric finishing pick up means that the fabric contains more water, requiring more energy and time in the stenter oven to dry. Conversely, too low a pick-up can lead to insufficient chemical application, failing to achieve the desired functional performance.
It is a balancing act between energy efficiency and product quality.
Process Calibration
Regular testing is required to maintain the accuracy of the padding system during continuous production runs. Laboratory staff calculate the expected fabric finishing pick up by comparing the weight of a fabric sample before and after passing through the liquor bath and squeeze rollers. This calibration helps adjust for differences in fabric structures, as denser weaves naturally absorb less liquid than open, porous knits.
It ensures that the chemical concentration in the bath remains aligned with the fabric speed. This prevents chemical waste and maintains consistent yarn protection during subsequent high-temperature treatment stages.
Treatment Uniformity
Uneven distribution of the finishing solution across the fabric width can cause variations in colour, texture, and performance. Standardized tests measure fabric finishing pick up at the center and edges of the fabric roll to prevent these defects. This measurement is a key quality control step before the fabric is sent to the cutting table.
It ensures that every part of the garment has the same functional protection.
