Pickup Measurement
Quantitative evaluation of liquid retention in textiles determines the weight of finishing chemistry absorbed by a fabric during the padding process. The gravimetric pickup test calculates this value by weighing the dry fabric specimen before pad-bath immersion and again immediately after it passes through the squeeze rollers. By comparing these two mass values, finishing mills calculate the wet pickup percentage, which directly influences the concentration of flame retardants, water repellents, or softeners applied to the textile.
Accurate determination prevents both chemical waste and performance failure.
Bath Concentration
Calculations of finishing bath recipe strengths rely entirely on the wet pickup percentage determined from test samples. When the gravimetric pickup test indicates a low retention rate, the chemical concentration in the pad bath must be increased to achieve the desired dry add-on weight on the fabric. Conversely, a high wet pickup requires a more dilute bath to avoid stiffening the fabric or wasting expensive chemicals.
Process Variable
Mechanical pressures and roller hardness in the padder dictate the volume of liquid retained by the moving textile web. Varying the squeeze roller pressure alters the gravimetric pickup test results, allowing technicians to optimize the expression of liquid across the full width of the fabric.
Moisture Balance
Incomplete drying or moisture regain before the initial weighing introduces errors that skew the calculated pickup value. Proper laboratory protocols require conditioned specimens to ensure that the pre-immersion weight reflects only the dry fiber mass.
