Transport Medium
A suspension of short fiber snippets in isopropyl alcohol facilitates the movement of samples through automated optical measurement systems. This isopropanol slurry carries the fibers at a controlled speed through the laser sensing zone. Its use is standard in instruments like the Laserscan for wool fineness testing.
Dispersion Function
Alcohol prevents the natural fibers from clumping together due to static or moisture. Within the fluid, snippets remain separated and randomly oriented as they pass the detector. This isolation is necessary for the laser to record the diameter of each individual fiber accurately.
Constant agitation of the tank prevents the fibers from settling at the bottom.
Operational Safety
Volatile liquids require specific ventilation and storage protocols within the laboratory environment. Staff must manage the risk of evaporation, which could alter the concentration of the suspension over time. Closed-loop systems help to minimize the release of fumes during routine testing.
Concentration Stability
Maintaining the correct ratio of fiber mass to fluid volume prevents coincidence errors at the sensor. If the mixture becomes too dense, the likelihood of multiple fibers passing the laser at once increases. Adding fresh alcohol or adjusting the fiber load keeps the system within its optimal operating range.
