Standardized Method
Standardized methods for extracting representative wool samples from densely packed bales using a hollow coring tool. IWTO-33 core sampling provides a way to obtain a sample that reflects the average quality of a whole lot without opening every bale. The tool penetrates deep into the bale to collect a cross-section of the fibers.
Extraction Process
Mechanical or manual pressure is used to drive the sharp-edged tube through the compressed wool. In IWTO-33 core sampling, the diameter of the tube and the number of cores taken per bale are strictly defined to ensure statistical accuracy. These small plugs of wool are then combined to form a composite sample for laboratory analysis.
Testing Target
Measurement of yield, vegetable matter base, and average fiber diameter is performed on the cored material. Because wool is a natural product with high variability, this sampling method is the only way to get a reliable result for a large shipment, preventing disputes over the value of the grease wool. The results are used to calculate the clean price of the wool.
Weight Adjustment
Moisture content of the bales is often measured at the same time to determine the correct commercial weight of the lot.
