Foreign Substances
Secondary compounds present in raw or processed textile materials include natural waxes, oils, and chemical sizing agents. To determine true fiber weight, these non fibrous materials must be removed and quantified using standardized extraction methods. This process isolates the pure textile fiber from any processing aids or contaminants.
Extraction Testing
Solvents such as petroleum ether or ethyl alcohol dissolve lipids, finishes, and starches without degrading the underlying cellulose or protein. In this procedure, the non fibrous materials are washed away, leaving the clean, dry fiber.
Yield Calculation
The clean fiber yield of a raw shipment is adjusted to account for the presence of non fibrous materials. This calculation ensures that buyers only pay for the actual usable fiber in a shipment. Accurate yields are calculated using formulas defined by international testing bodies.
The total mass of the shipment is reduced by the calculated percentage of extracted compounds. This reduction establishes the net clean dry weight of the textile consignment.
Quality Assessment
Excessive amounts of finishing oils or size can interfere with the dyeing and finishing of fabrics. Monitoring the level of non fibrous materials in incoming shipments prevents uneven color take up and fabric spots. Spinners must control these levels to ensure consistent downstream processing.
This monitoring supports high-quality standards throughout the production chain.
