Cleanliness Evaluation
Digital scan measurements of surface debris on raw fibre samples calculate the total area occupied by non-lint particles. The trash area analysis is used to determine the percentage of a sample’s surface that consists of leaf, seed coat and bark fragments. This metric is more accurate than simple count because it accounts for the size of each contaminant.
Optical Scanning
The instrument presses the cotton sample against a glass window and takes a digital image. During trash area analysis, the software calculates the ratio of dark pixels to the light background of the lint. This provides a repeatable and objective measurement of the trash content.
Waste Management
Spinning mills use this measurement to predict the amount of waste that will be removed during the opening and carding stages.
Yarn Manufacturing
High trash area readings indicate that the yarn will require intensive cleaning, which can damage the fibres. If the trash area analysis shows high levels of contamination, the mill must slow down its machines and adjust the settings to remove the trash. Failing to remove these particles results in weak yarn and creates visible flecks in dyed fabrics, which lowers the quality of the finished textile product.
