Durability Enhancement
Processing enhancement techniques improve the ability of a dyed textile to retain its colour when subjected to water and laundering. Effective wet fastness optimization involves the selection of high affinity dyes and the rigorous removal of unreacted pigment from the fibre surface. This property is essential for preventing colour bleeding into adjacent white panels of a garment.
Washing Sequence
Multi stage after-clearing sequences using specialized detergents and hot water are the most common methods for achieving this goal. During wet fastness optimization, the temperature of the wash water must exceed the glass transition point of the fibre to allow trapped, unfixed dye to migrate out. Insufficient washing is the primary cause of poor fastness results in polyester and cotton blends.
Fixing Treatment
Cationic fixing agents applied in the final rinse stage create a protective barrier that reduces dye solubility. While wet fastness optimization often relies on these chemicals, they must be used carefully to avoid changing the shade or the hand feel of the fabric.
Performance Validation
Standardized tests like ISO 105-C06 provide a repeatable way to measure the success of these treatments. The wet fastness optimization is considered successful when the staining on the multifibre strip stays within the permitted grey scale rating.
