Reference Standard
Ceramic standards with stable spectral reflectance curves are widely used to verify the performance and linearity of industrial colorimeters. The set known as BCRA Series II Tiles consists of twelve colored and two grey plaques specifically designed to test spectrophotometer performance across the visible spectrum. These tiles allow quality control laboratories to audit instrument repeatability and inter-instrument agreement.
By comparing measured values against certified master data, operators can identify alignment errors or component aging in their equipment.
Thermochromic Sensitivity
Fluctuations in ambient laboratory temperature can cause slight, reversible shifts in the color of the ceramic surfaces. The orange and red BCRA Series II Tiles exhibit the highest sensitivity to temperature variations, making them useful for testing instrument environment stability. To ensure accurate verification, measurements must be performed within a narrow temperature range, usually between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius.
Understanding this sensitivity prevents laboratories from misinterpreting temperature-induced shifts as instrument errors.
Spectral Stability
Unlike organic pigments or dyes, these ceramic materials do not fade or degrade when exposed to normal light levels.
Calibration Verification
Periodic measurement of the tile set provides a clear history of instrument behavior over months and years of continuous operation. If the measured values for the tiles deviate from the certified coordinates, it indicates that the spectrophotometer requires professional servicing or recalibration. Using this system ensures that color data shared between apparel brands and suppliers remain reliable across global supply networks.
