Valuation Process
Mass adjustment procedures in textile trading establish the invoice weight of a shipment by correcting the raw weight for moisture content. For transactions involving natural or synthetic fibres, commercial weight recalculation applies standard moisture allowances to the dry mass of the material. This correction ensures that buyers do not purchase excess water.
Moisture Correction
Oven drying of representative laboratory samples determines the absolute dry weight of the shipment. Once this base dryness is measured, the official moisture regain percentage is mathematically added to calculate the standard weight.
Financial Reconciliation
Discrepancies between the actual moisture content and the official trade allowance generate adjustments in the final invoiced amount. If a shipment of wool arrives with high water content, the transaction weight is adjusted downward to match the legal dry mass plus standard regain.
Quality Control
Precise testing in certified laboratories prevents disputes between fibre suppliers and spinning mills regarding damp shipments. Standard ASTM or ISO test methods define the exact sampling and drying sequences required to validate these weight measurements. Certified results provide the legal foundation for international fibre contracts, as even a minor deviation in moisture measurements can lead to substantial financial differences in bulk wool or cotton shipments.
