Capillary Structure
Microscopic interstitial void channels distributed between individual constituent fibres inside a single yarn bundle govern fine capillary transport. Liquid diffusion mechanics track intra-yarn micro-pores to evaluate spontaneous capillary wicking, internal moisture management and dye liquor absorption within spun or multifilament assemblies. These narrow channels measure from tenths of a micron to roughly ten microns, residing entirely within the structural envelope of the yarn bundle.
The property governs internal filament spacing, ceasing to define bulk airflow dynamics which remain dominated by larger openings between adjacent yarns.
Transport Dynamic
Surface tension forces liquid into intra-yarn micro-pores via spontaneous capillary action, following the classical Laplace pressure gradient. Narrower radii between densely packed filaments generate higher capillary pressures, drawing perspiration or pad liquor deep into internal yarn recesses. High yarn twist compresses fibres together, reducing micro-pore radii and slowing initial fluid uptake velocities while strengthening ultimate capillary suction heights.
Texturised multifilament yarns feature irregular crimped filaments that create expansive, disordered micro-pore networks that optimize rapid sweat absorption in activewear.
Consolidation Shift
Mechanical spinning parameters, thermal relaxation and wet finishing continuously modify micro-channel dimensions inside yarn structures. Ring spun yarns feature tighter outer sheath packing with open interior micro-cavities, whereas air-jet yarns exhibit tight outer wrappings that restrict fluid entry into the parallel core. Desizing and scouring dissolve external coatings, clearing obstructed intra-yarn micro-pores for rapid dye uptake.
Subsequent resin finishing can saturate and seal these minute conduits, permanently degrading moisture-wicking and vapour-transport properties.
Microscopic Verification
Liquid nitrogen freeze-fracturing coupled with scanning electron microscopy enables high-resolution visual examination of interior yarn packing densities. Mercury intrusion porosimetry quantifies the specific volume and pore size distribution of micro-voids across differential pressure ranges. Standard vertical wicking tests according to AATCC 197 record capillary liquid rise over time, serving as an indirect performance indicator for intra-yarn transport capacity.
Intra-yarn micro-pores govern continuous dye penetration rates and moisture-wicking performance in technical performance textiles.
