Organic Crosslinker
Highly reactive chemical agents possessing multiple aziridine ring groups find widespread use as room-temperature curing additives for waterborne polymer coatings. Adding a polyfunctional aziridine to acrylic or polyurethane dispersions increases both the dry-cleaning resistance and the mechanical durability of fabric finishes.
Reaction Process
Unshared electrons on the nitrogen atoms of the aziridine rings react readily with carboxylic acid groups on the latex polymer chains at ambient temperatures. This reaction generates a three-dimensional network that restricts polymer chain mobility and prevents the coating from dissolving in solvents or water. Because polyfunctional aziridine reacts without requiring high heat, it is suitable for heat-sensitive fibres like polypropylene or wool that cannot tolerate the high temperatures of standard curing ovens.
Safety Management
Industrial operations implement strict ventilation and protective measures due to the high toxicity and potential sensitizing effects of these raw chemical compounds. Wet processing mills monitor the concentration of polyfunctional aziridine in wastewater streams to ensure compliance with local chemical discharge regulations. Using closed dosage systems minimizes worker exposure on the factory floor.
Mill Application
Finishing technicians prepare fresh coating mixtures before each production run because the crosslinker has a limited pot life once mixed. The mixture undergoes rapid viscosity changes if left unused, which impairs the coating consistency on the fabric surface. Applying the coating promptly avoids coating defects and ensures uniform water repellency.
