Penetration Index
Quantitative ratio calculations express the proportion of color concentrated on the outer yarn perimeter relative to dye penetration across the internal yarn core. Denim mill technicians measure the ring dyeing index to control the wash-down characteristics of indigo-dyed cotton yarns during garment stone washing. Cross-sectional microtomy combined with optical image analysis yields numerical values indicating ring intensity.
The index governs indigo warp yarn production for jeans, jacket denim, and specialized wash-down apparel fabrics. It stops applying when yarns are uniformly dyed from surface to core and display no white central zone.
Washdown Effect
High index values represent a thin ring of dark indigo dye surrounding a white fiber core within the yarn structure. During denim garment finishing, high ring dyeing index yarns lose surface color rapidly under abrasive stone washing or laser etching, exposing white inner core fibres to create high-contrast distress effects. Low index values indicate deep dye penetration, which resists abrasive color removal and produces muted, low-contrast wash results.
Dyers adjust pH levels, hydrosulfite concentration, and immersion times in indigo range dye boxes to lock in desired index values.
Process Control
Higher dye bath pH reduces indigo affinity and promotes ring dyeing. Shorter dip durations restrict dye liquor movement into core fibres.
Abrasion Performance
Surface wear on garments exposes un-dyed internal core zones during laundering cycles. Controlled ring distribution ensures repeatable distress patterns during commercial garment processing.
