Lateral Tension
Horizontal components deployed during loom operation determine fabric width stability and edge density by running perpendicular to the warp ends. Weft yarns fill the open sheds created by harness motion, crossing the fabric continuously from selvage to selvage. Tension variations across the insertion cycle generate bowed picks or uneven pick counts per inch, which distort the final hand and drape of apparel goods.
Mills measure linear density in tex or denier to verify consistency before spooling material onto shuttleless projectile or air jet insertion systems.
Insertion Velocity
Mechanical throughput depends entirely on the speed at which pick insertion occurs across the loom reed space. Projectile mass or pneumatic air pressure propels these horizontal strands across the warp sheet within milliseconds. Higher operational speeds increase frictional drag against adjacent filaments, necessitating lubricants or sizing agents to prevent abrasion damage.
Excessive acceleration forces risk filament breakage, leading to loom stops and costly downtime in large-scale weaving facilities.
Twist Geometry
Helical turns per unit length dictate breaking strength, hairiness levels and elongation properties prior to the dyeing stage. Low twist configurations yield softer hand feels in finished garments, while high twist variations produce crepe effects and structural rigidity. Twisting parameters also influence dye liquor penetration, because tightly wound filaments restrict fluid diffusion during open-width or beam dyeing operations.
Laboratory twist testers verify these specifications against mill purchase orders before grey goods enter finishing plants.
Selvage Formation
Edge containment relies on specific interlacing techniques applied to the terminal ends of horizontal picks during loom traversal. Leno weaves, tuck-in mechanisms or fused thermoplastic edges prevent fraying during subsequent scouring, bleaching and apparel manufacturing processes. Poor edge control leads to curling during garment cutting, which degrades yield rates in commercial clothing production.
Final inspection audits measure edge flatness and density to guarantee that fabric rolls meet industrial cutting room standards.
