Mechanical Application
Foulard processing equipment achieves uniform liquid application on open-width fabrics through controlled mechanical pressure. Operating continuous padding mangles involves passing the web of fabric through a liquid bath and then through a pair of pressurized rollers. This action forces the chemical treatment deep into the yarn structure.
Excess liquid is squeezed back into the trough. The resulting mechanical extraction leaves a calculated amount of moisture in the textile material.
Pressure Distribution
Pneumatic or hydraulic systems maintain consistent nip pressure across the entire width of the rollers to prevent uneven dye take-up. When fabric thickness varies, continuous padding mangles adjust their roller alignment to ensure uniform treatment. Uneven pressure produces shading defects from selvedge to selvedge.
Deflection-controlled rollers compensate for natural bending.
Liquor Extraction
The ratio of liquor retained by the wet fabric to its dry weight depends on the hardness of the roller covering and the applied load. High roll hardness decreases the wet pick-up. Soft rubber coverings increase the dwell time in the nip.
Process Optimization
Industrial operations must optimize roller speed to allow sufficient chemical diffusion into the fibres without causing surface pooling or liquid splashing. When production speed exceeds the threshold, the chemistry remains on the surface. Long-term runnability is maintained by monitoring roll wear and thermal expansion.
Surface defects can ruin the finish.
