Precision Instrument
Handheld devices measure the force applied to a moving yarn or fabric web during the weaving or winding process. A mechanical tension gauge provides a direct reading of the pulling force in grams or centinewtons through a system of rollers and a calibrated spring. This tool identifies points of excessive stress that cause yarn breakage or fabric distortion.
Operational Mechanism
The technician places the yarn between three rollers where the center roller is attached to a tensioned spring and a dial indicator. As the yarn passes through, the displacement of the center roller reflects the amount of force present in the line. Fluctuations in the dial reading signal problems with the feeder or the brake settings on the machine.
Regular calibration against known weights ensures the accuracy of these readings during production audits.
Setup Speed
Checking tension at the start of a new shift prevents mass defects.
Quality Control
Consistent tension across all spindles or looms prevents variations in fabric density and appearance. If the mechanical tension gauge shows a wide range of values, the resulting fabric will likely suffer from streaks or uneven shrinkage. Using this device helps the mill maintain a stable environment for high speed manufacturing.
