Film Encapsulation
Polyvinyl alcohol polymer formulations applied to spun yarns increase tensile strength and abrasion resistance during warp preparation. Evaluating sizing PVA content impact reveals how film elasticity, yarn encapsulation and hairiness reduction influence weaving efficiency on high speed looms. Proper sizing formulation creates a tough, flexible protective coating around spun cotton or blended yarns, preventing end breaks caused by mechanical friction against loom components.
Concentration Pickup
Polymer concentration in the size box governs film pickup and fiber-to-fiber bonding within the yarn core. Higher polymer ratios increase film tensile strength and film toughness up to an optimal saturation limit.
Warp Abrasion
Modern air-jet and rapier looms subject warp yarns to severe mechanical abrasion and cyclic tension loads during shedding. Optimizing size pickup levels reduces warp stop rates, minimizes shed lint accumulation and maintains weaving loom productivity. Mills measure size pickup percentages and perform abrasion resistance testing on sized yarn samples to verify formulation consistency before loading warp beams onto looms.
Correct sizing levels prevent yarn shedding and ensure smooth passage through loom drop wires, heald eyes and reed wires.
Desize Removal
Excessively high polymer concentrations form heavy film coats that prove difficult to wash out during subsequent desizing operations. Incomplete size removal leaves residual film patches on woven fabric, causing un-level dyeing, spotty finishing and harsh fabric hand. Desizing wastewater containing high concentrations of synthetic polymers increases biological and chemical oxygen demand in effluent treatment plants.
