Thermal Zone
Thermal distribution in fabric finishing represents the set temperature across the sequential heating zones of a stenter frame. Finishing mills adjust the stenter temperature profile to dry, heat-set, and cure fabrics without damaging sensitive fibers. For stretch fabrics containing elastane, a precise profile is necessary to lock the fabric dimensions while preserving the elastic properties of the core yarn.
A typical profile starts with lower temperatures for drying and then rises to a peak for heat-setting, followed by cooling zones to stabilize the fabric before winding.
Heat Setting
The peak zone temperature determines the efficiency of the heat-setting process. If the stenter temperature profile has a peak that is too low, the fabric will suffer from high residual shrinkage. If it is too high, the synthetic fibers will weaken and lose their strength.
Drying Phase
Drying must be completed in the first few zones before the fabric enters the high-heat section. Wet fabric exposed to sudden high heat can suffer from steam pockets and dye migration. This sequence of temperatures is carefully set based on fabric weight and speed.
Quality Control
Thermocouple strips and wireless heat sensors are run through the stenter to verify the actual temperature profile. This measurement ensures that each zone matches the target temperature and that there are no cold spots. This checking prevents batch-to-batch variation in fabric width and hand.
