Gravimetric Technique
Gravimetric techniques for measuring moisture sensitivity provide precise data on how fibers react to changing humidity levels over a specific timeframe. Dynamic vapor sorption uses a sensitive microbalance to track the weight changes of a small textile sample as it is exposed to controlled pulses of water vapor. The instrument records the speed of moisture uptake and the final equilibrium point for each humidity step.
Material Response
Speed of absorption is a critical factor for activewear fabrics that must manage perspiration during use. By using dynamic vapor sorption, a lab can distinguish between two polyester yarns that have the same total capacity but different rates of moisture movement. The resulting data shows the exact second when the fiber reaches saturation or starts to dry.
Testing Efficiency
Modern automated systems allow for the rapid assessment of multiple humidity levels without manual weighing between steps. Older methods required days of conditioning in salt jars, whereas dynamic vapor sorption completes a full profile in a few hours. This efficiency enables mills to screen new fiber treatments quickly before moving to bulk production.
Measurement Range
Sensors within the equipment operate from near zero percent to ninety-eight percent relative humidity. Accuracy at the extreme ends of the scale is essential for understanding how materials behave in desert or tropical climates. The data stops being useful if the sample size is too large to allow for uniform vapor penetration through the entire structure.
