Kinematic Ratio
Surface speed differentials between feeding and take-up godet rolls define the plastic deformation applied to synthetic filaments during hot or cold drafting. In filament spinning and technical yarn manufacturing, draw ratio determines the degree of longitudinal molecular alignment, tensile tenacity, and residual breaking elongation. The parameter is calculated as the peripheral velocity of the output roll divided by the peripheral velocity of the input roll.
Applying a higher draw ratio stretches unoriented spun filaments, transforming disordered polymer chains into aligned microfibrils oriented parallel to the fibre axis.
Molecular Orientation
Polymer chains unwind and align under the axial stress generated between consecutive heated roll pairs. As draw ratio increases, crystalline domains rotate toward the fiber axis, which increases filament birefringence, raises sonic velocity through the yarn, and elevates tensile modulus. In industrial polyester yarn production, an increase from a feeder ratio of three to five reduces ultimate elongation from over forty percent down to single digits.
Conversely, tenacity increases progressively until chain slip transitions into chain scission.
Filament Property
Tensile characteristics respond directly to drafting adjustments on the extrusion line. High draw ratio settings yield high-tenacity yarns preferred for industrial sewing threads, webbing, and tire cord fabrics where low elongation under load is required. Low settings produce soft, ductile yarns intended for apparel knits that require high elongation and superior dye uptake.
Texturing lines run lower effective draw ratios to avoid filament breakage during simultaneous false-twist crimping.
Processing Instability
Exceeding the maximum draw ratio for a given polymer melt index induces drawing resonance, localized necking, and individual filament snap. When filament strain exceeds the natural stretch capability of the cooling tow, yarn packages suffer from fluff accumulation, broken filaments, and variable denier. Processors verify drawing uniformity by monitoring yarn linear density variations and running continuous tension sensors across the drawing zone.
